The founder, Lilly Ernsting, initially set up a private collection of glass objects over 40 years. This collection was the starting point and occasion for the opening of the glassmuseum in the year 1996. While the collection initially focussed on works in the functional style, from the mid-eighties, under the influence of the gallery owner, Jaap de Harder, and the artist Mieke Groot artistic autonomous objects were also acquired.

The collection focussing on contemporary European glass is continuously expanded through new purchases of up-to-date and high quality outstanding works. It reflects the developments and trends of the artistic glass design – also in association with other materials. In this connection, the viewpoint is not restricted to the decorative, sculptural or functional element, but it includes all these fascinating appearances.

The glassmuseum shows within the scope of regularly changing exhibitions a selection of objects from the property of the foundation and new acquisitions as well as exhibitions which are devoted to individual artists or themes. In this way, the Ernsting Stiftung wishes to arouse the enthusiasm for the medium glass with as many visitors as possible.

The responsible body for the glassmuseum is the Ernsting Stiftung Alter Hof Herding.
